New Vision for Pease Pottage, West Sussex
23rd August 2015A Vision for the Future
This exciting project has the potential for 600 homes and, working with local charity St Catherine’s Hospice, plans to deliver a new hospice building as well as new community facilities to integrate the hospice with the local community.
Sheltered by natural woodland, and focussed on a large central green space for sport, relaxation and community life, the homes proposed will be inspired by the character of traditional Mid-Sussex communities. The proposals include bungalows for the elderly, affordable housing for first-time buyers, and high-quality family houses together with homes for social rent and shared ownership.
St Catherine’s Hospice, a local charity which has been an integral part of the community for the past thirty years, will also form part of this new development. The hospice provides specialised care and support for those with a life-limiting illness, and their family and friends. Across Sussex and Mid-Surrey, it will aim to support over 1,800 people each year.
St Catherine’s Hospice provide all care completely free of charge, delivered at their hospice facilities in Crawley and Caterham, and in patients’ own homes. But, with growing numbers of people needing their support and increased demand on their services, St Catherine’s need to make sure they have a facility that can continue to serve local people for many years to come.
The current facility in Crawley has just 18 In Patient beds – far fewer than the recommended number for a catchment area of 560,000 people. With no room for further expansion the trustees have been considering accommodation options for some time and were delighted when a supporter gifted the hospice five acres of land on the development site for the provision of a new state-of-the-art facility.
Giles Tomsett –
Chief Executive, St Catherine’s Hospice
Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive at St Catherine’s Hospice, said “We are absolutely delighted to share these exciting plans with the local community. The new space will enable us to care for more people, and ensure both families and their loved ones are as comfortable as they can be. We want to support those who need us most, for many years to come. We hope the public will support us in our bid to care for even more people in our community, through engaging with our proposals for this site and in helping us to raise additional funds to realise our plans”.
Robert Boughton –
Managing Director, Thakeham
Robert Boughton, Managing Director of Thakeham Homes, said “Thakeham is proud to work alongside St Catherine’s Hospice on a project that will help them respond to the needs for their expert and compassionate care for many years to come. We understand that modern housebuilders need to do more than just build homes; we also need to create spaces for communities to develop and thrive and we are committed to delivering that. It is vital that local people have a role in shaping the communities of the future and so we really want to listen to their aspirations for the area.”
Consultation Event
The plans are still at an early stage. Thakeham and St Catherine’s are keen to gather feedback from the local community and will hold a consultation event at Cottesmore Golf Club on Tuesday 29th September from 3pm to 8pm. Click here to find out more.
