St Catherine’s Hospice Annual Dragon Boat Race
In its 15th year, St Catherine’s Hospice delivered a fabulous fundraising event for its Annual Dragon Boat Race, enjoyed by all – rowers and spectators alike. The festival has now become an annual date in Thakeham’s diary and we were delighted to take part and raise vital funds for the Hospice.
It costs £17,225 a day for St Catherine’s Hospice to provide their incredible standard of end of life care to both patients and their families, so Thakeham were determined to make every penny count for this incredible cause.
The Thakeham Lions
Set in beautiful surroundings at Tilgate Park, Crawley and promising a fun-filled day for all the family, it’s an event not to miss – and this year was no exception. The day began warm and sunny and The Thakeham Lions were full of anticipation and excitement to take to the water. In high spirits and fuelled with competitive adrenalin, the Thakeham Lions took their places in a 40ft Dragon Boat. Sporting a lion theme with painted faces, furry ears and fluffy tails – the team was off with a bang!
Race Day Stats
With cheers from the crowd and incredible support from spectators, the Lions rowed their tails off. Finding their rhythm and gaining speed, they rowed a fantastic time of 1:05 and claimed second place in the first heat.
Powered by racing tips for the second round, excitement ruled and despite the heavens opening, the Lions refused to let the weather dampen their spirits! Rocketing ahead in the second heat, against driving rain and strong winds, the team managed an impressive 1:06 and won the race. Roaring with delight, they were filled with even more determination for the third heat. Rowing as hard and fast as their paws could manage – the Lions sadly were beaten by a 100th of a second, taking second place in the final heat and narrowly missing out on the grand finale. Great work team – it really was the taking part that counted!
A few words from Robert Boughton, Group Managing Director, Thakeham Group
“Thakeham was once again delighted to take part in this fantastic fundraising event. We have a special relationship with St Catherine’s, which grows year on year as we work towards delivering our Pease Pottage development which creates a new home for St Catherine’s Hospice. We are also hugely grateful to those that have supported us in our fundraising – together we have made a difference. Thank you to the Thakeham team for their valiant efforts and to St Catherine’s, for organising such a fun-filled day – we look forward to seeing you again next year.”
There’s still time to donate to the cause!
Aside from the huge amount of fun had by the team, Thakeham is proud to have raised over £6000 for St Catherine’s Hospice – a charity that gives so much to so many. Our suppliers, contractors, consultants and other friends of Thakeham have been instrumental in making this happen – thank you.
