How we calculate energy savings
We have taken the latest information from the Ofgem website to establish typical energy usage. Also taken the Ofgem energy prices (1 January to 30 June 2024). It is important to note that energy prices are constantly changing, and nobody can predict the future costs with certainty. Energy bills are a direct result of the usage profile (the more you use the more you pay) and these numbers are an average from all differing house types, occupants, usage profiles etc.
According to Ofgem, the typical 2 to 3 bedroom house uses 2,700kWh of electricity and 11,500kWh of gas (more for larger houses), occupied by a “typical” 2.4 people. For comparison, we have used the government’s Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) calculations to predict energy consumption from three of our house types, which assume a usage profile from building regulations.
House | Net Zero Carbon annual saving compared with Ofgem national average | Net Zero Carbon annual saving compared with latest building regulations |
The Merrow (2-bedroom 2H8) | £980 | £430 |
The Linchmere (3-bedroom 3H12b) | £960 | £470 |
The Brockham (4-bedroom 4H8b) | £1,400 | £730 |
SAP only models the regulated energy (this includes heating, hot water, lights, fans, and pumps). To make this comparable to the Ofgem “average” we have assumed that 50% of the energy usage profile from Ofgem is the unregulated portion to add to the energy for our houses (50% is a historically accepted ratio between regulated and unregulated energy and is accepted by consultants in the industry as an average in the absence of real measured data).
For Octopus Zero Bills houses we can declare the full average cost of an energy bill from the Ofgem information as a pure saving, guaranteed for the duration of the contract (which is expected to be perpetual).
Zero Bills homes | 2 to 3 bedroom | 4 + bedroom |
Average energy bill calculated from average consumption and average costs | £1,561 | £2,338 |
