We’re tackling the construction skills gap. Discover more about graduate and apprenticeship roles in engineering, design, and construction.
Working for us includes school leavers and university graduates. We have a range of apprenticeships and graduate roles across our teams and with our supply chain.
When you join us as an apprentice or graduate, you’ll work across many teams and disciplines. You’ll get a deep understanding of our business to help you choose a career path.
Our apprenticeships combine real work experience with learning. They are open to people of all ages and at any stage of their career.
When you finish, you’ll have skills, experience, and a good chance of getting a permanent job. Many of our apprentices go on to permanent roles in the business.
You can start at a level equal to A levels and go all the way up to a Master’s degree.
Our apprenticeships can last from 18 months to five years, depending on the course.
While you learn, you also get paid a salary. This means you don’t have to worry about big university fees.
I joined as an apprentice to get hands-on experience while studying for a Civil Engineering degree. I’d already worked with a local builder and helped my dad build an extension at home, so I knew I enjoyed construction.
After my A Levels, I did a work placement and spent time across different sites and departments. That led to the apprenticeship offer — which I was excited to accept.
Since then, I’ve worked with a great team, picked up real engineering skills, and been part of meetings, site visits, and problem-solving on live projects. It’s helped me apply what I learn at university and understand how it works in the real world.
Next up: finish my degree and aim for a Master’s in Engineering Management.
I first found out about Thakeham when I did work experience there whilst I was in school. After work experience, I exchanged contact details and stayed in contact for a couple of months until an opportunity came up, which, fortunately, was in the commercial department.
What I do day-to-day is procurement, which is contract negotiations, sorting payments, and surveying the houses in the build stage. It can be challenging, you’re working with traders who have been in the industry for years and years, negotiating prices and going into details.
I’ve learned so much over the past two years. The knowledge and experience I’ve been able to gain have been invaluable.

Get hands-on with advanced tools and sustainable design practices that prepare you for a rapidly evolving industry.
I joined after university, keen to get real experience in construction. I started as a Strategic Graduate, rotating through teams like Planning, Engineering, Design and Development. It was a great way to understand how everything fits together and meet people across the business.
Now I’m part of the Development team, where no two days are the same. I could be reviewing finances, checking legal documents or working on design layouts—it’s fast-paced and varied, and I’ve learnt a lot quickly.
The support I’ve had as a graduate has been brilliant. I’ve had chances to present in key meetings, which has really boosted my confidence. One project I’m proud to be part of is Welborne—6,000 new homes with high-quality, unique design. It’s been amazing to see it grow from an empty field to something real.
I'm excited to keep progressing and make a real difference on future projects.
