Work starts on 250 sustainable homes in Yapton

250 new homes

Work starts this week on 250 new sustainable homes in Yapton, bringing a new focus on low-cost energy and affordable housing for the local community.

In May, affordable housing provider Hyde Group appointed South East community creator Thakeham to build 220 houses and 30 flats on Bilsham Road on the south western edge of Yapton which is, in turn, three miles north east of Bognor Regis.

Building will take place over four phases with completion early in 2025. 92 homes will be available for social rent whilst the remaining 152 will be offered for shared ownership.

With sustainability in mind, the homes will use timber frame construction throughout. All the homes will achieve the highest Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) A rating. There will be extensive electrical vehicle charging across the site and the homes will include hydrogen-ready boilers and the whole development.

Rob Boughton, CEO of Thakeham, said:

Thakeham is proud to be creating this sustainable community of affordable homes for local people in Arun District. Yapton is a perfect location. With Hyde Group, we are working alongside a partner who shares our core values on sustainability, biodiversity and community creation. We are also very pleased to see a high number of shared ownership homes coming forward. With property prices continuing to increase, affordability for new buyers remains a real challenge and delivery of these new shared ownership homes will make a real difference to many buyers in this area. We can’t wait to get started.

This is our first project that we have contracted on with Hyde and everyone at Thakeham is looking forward to delivering the kind of high-quality development that Thakeham is so well known for.

Guy Slocombe, Hyde’s Chief Investment officer said:

We are extremely excited to be working with Thakeham on our development of 250, much needed, new affordable homes in Yapton.

The new community will have public open spaces, and homes that have been designed to enhance the character of Yapton village. The majority of the homes will be two storey, sympathetic to the site’s surroundings and in keeping with the character of this part of Yapton. I’m really looking forward to watching the progression of this new sustainable community
