A plastic revolution with Biffa and Planet Mark

During Plastic Free July this year, we launched our plastic mapping project, investigating the journey of plastics to and from one of our sites. Completing our plastic stream analysis gave us a better understanding of the most significant types of plastic we use and dispose of and how the different types of plastic waste are processed. With the investigation and analysis now complete, we are publishing our Plastic Action Plan report, developed with the support of Biffa and Planet Mark, and inspired by the journey of the Ocean Sheroes.

A Plastic Revolution

Our report, A Plastic Revolution, aims to put plastic in it’s place. The data has been gathered from a three-month study of our flagship development, Woodgate in Pease Pottage, with support from waste management company, Biffa. Our Woodgate site team have segmented and identified all plastic waste from the development to understand what we should Remove, Improve or Keep – helping us appreciate how to address the responsible use of this material.

‘A Plastic Revolution’ was created in partnership with Biffa, Ocean Sheroes, and Planet Mark to ensure that we consider all key elements of the revolution.

Ocean Sheroes

In March 2021, Thakeham became the official Sustainability & Education Partner for their challenge to complete one of the toughest races on Earth to raise awareness of plastic pollution in our sea, whilst fundraising for the Seabin Project, an eco-innovation that sucks in ocean plastics.

Throughout their mission, we learnt more about the important role the construction industry plays and during Plastic Free July, we started investigating the journey of plastics in our business and shared a first glimpse of our infographic for our plastic mapping project. We were inspired by the journey of the Ocean Sheroes to start this plastic revolution and to come up with an action plan to reduce the impact of plastic across its lifecycle. Now, during COP26, we are ready to share our full report on the Plastic Revolution with the world.

Plastic Action Plan Report

Our Plastic Action Plan report highlights where the industry should Remove, Improve or Keep plastic use and processes to tackle single use plastic, move towards a more circular economy and minimise the climate impacts of plastic use in construction. You can view the full report here:
