Zero Carbon homes in lifetime operation by 2025

From 2025, every Thakeham home will be zero carbon in lifetime operation. This means that the amount of carbon emissions associated with the building’s operational/regulated energy on an annual basis is zero or negative. A net zero carbon building is highly energy efficient and powered from on-site and/or off-site renewable energy sources. Smart home solutions are delivered in a way that consumers find simple and convenient, to enhance their lifestyles while also saving them money and reducing their carbon footprint. We are technology-driven, looking to implement battery storage systems supplied by both mains electricity and renewable technology which can power the home when needed, diverted to supply the electric vehicle charge point at the front of the house, or stored to relieve pressure on the power grid at times of high demand.

We have committed that from 2025, every Thakeham home will be carbon neutral in production, which is defined by the UK GBC as: “When the amount of carbon emissions associated with a building’s embodied and operational impacts over the life of the building, including its disposal, are zero or negative, through the use of offsets or the net export of on-site renewable energy.” We will use the methodology set out in the RICS Professional Statement ‘Whole life carbon assessment for the built environment’ stages A1-A5 scope for embodied carbon to practical completion to ensure transparency.

The Thakeham Group has committed be a net zero carbon business by 2025. This commitment includes the emissions from our business that are excluded from the scope of our carbon neutral production commitment, including our business travel and energy use in our offices.

Reducing our emissions as close as possible to zero is our priority – through making informed product choices, reducing waste and transportation, stakeholder engagement to improve the availability of sustainable materials, and investments in business transformation. Once our baseline data is confirmed, our science-based carbon emissions reduction target will continue our drive to reduce our impact. The remaining carbon emissions from production will be offset in line with our approach to offsetting.
