Ed, Engineering Apprentice
Joining Thakeham as an apprentice was an exciting start to a new journey in Engineering. Studying for my – I knew my next steps were to find a role where I could gain practical experience whilst also gaining a professional degree. I knew I was interested in construction after working for a local builder as well as helping my father build an extension on my family home.
After my A Levels, I joined Thakeham for work experience where I rotated through different departments and construction sites. I was delighted to be offered an apprenticeship opportunity in the engineering department.
During my time here, I’ve been lucky enough to be surrounded by great colleagues and mentorship allowing me to get involved in engineering management across different construction sites. This includes client and project meetings as well as site walkovers, detailed analysis and problem solving.
The knowledge I have gained working here is practical and translates well to my Civil Engineering Degree studies. The balance of studying theory at university and implementing it on a practical level is the perfect hybrid learning approach for me.
Future prospects include passing my bachelor’s degree before pursuing my next goal of achieving a master’s degree in engineering management.
Apprenticeships in commercial & finance
Josh, Commercial Apprentice
I first found out about Thakeham when I did work experience there whilst I was in school. After work experience, I exchanged contact details and stayed in contact for a couple of months until an opportunity came up, which, fortunately, was in the commercial department.
What I do day-to-day is procurement, which is contract negotiations, sorting payments, and surveying the houses in the build stage. It can be challenging, you’re working with traders who have been in the industry for years and years, negotiating prices and going into details.
I’ve learned so much over the past two years. The knowledge and experience I’ve been able to gain have been invaluable.
