Thakeham Signs Green Pensions Charter

Thakeham has joined Make My Money Matter’s (MMMM) Green Pensions Charter.

The award-winning community creator has pledged to ensure their workplace pension is invested sustainably and aligns with the rest of their commitment to net zero by 2025.

Thakeham made three significant zero carbon commitments two years ago. By 2025, every Thakeham home will be zero carbon in lifetime operation; each home built will be carbon neutral in production; and Thakeham Group will be a zero-carbon business.

MMMM is a campaign with a mission to use green pensions to reduce emissions, combat deforestation, invest in climate solutions and phase out support for new fossil fuel use.

Signatories to the charter, which was launched in May 2021, pledge to take steps to ensure that their workplace pension is invested sustainably and aligns with the rest of their business sustainability policies.

The charter responds to recent research from MMMM which found that the majority of large pension schemes are “failing to act” on climate change, with UK pension scheme investments currently enabling the release of around 330m tonnes of carbon every year.

Thakeham Sustainability Director Josie Cadwallader-Hughes said:

When we found that making your pension ‘green’ is 21 times more effective than giving up flying, becoming a vegetarian and changing energy providers combined, we knew that we had to act. Helping our employees reduce their carbon footprint is just as important to us as reducing Thakeham’s carbon footprint and by changing our pensions over to a sustainable more ethical fund, we know that together we are making a difference.

Race to Zero campaign

Last year, Thakeham became the UK’s first housebuilder on the SME Climate Hub to join the United Nations’ ‘Race to Zero’ campaign. The ‘Race to Zero’ is a United Nations’ campaign – driven by science – designed to aggregate leadership and support for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery. The campaign also aims to prevent future threats, create decent jobs, and unlock inclusive, sustainable growth. The company works with sustainability-focused partners like Planet Mark and has a leadership role in The Future Homes Hub cross-industry advisory group.
