Eddie & Ellie visit Lenham Primary School

Eddie & Ellie’s Wild Adventures is a cross-curriculum educational programme for lower KS2 pupils that is built around a children’s book. It is a fundamental part of Thakeham’s Social Value approach, driving one of our four key Social Value goals – Building Future Generations.

Eddie & Ellie’s Wild Adventures came to fruition from our passion to equip local children with knowledge and enjoyment of the nature and ecology around them. The educational programme has already benefited schools across the South-East through interactive and informative workshops within the fun-packed programme aligned with the National Curriculum.

It’s a fully Thakeham funded programme of workshops, site visits and a school trip to a Wildlife Trust facility that follows a development’s journey from planning to site completion. Carefully created in consultation with educational specialists, Wildlife Trusts, parents and their children, Eddie and Ellie is curated to leave a lasting impact long after the Thakeham development has been completed.

Eddie & Ellie is more than an educational programme, it creates a legacy of children who appreciate and look after nature.

Lenham Primary School

The Eddie & Ellie workshop took place with 28 year 3 pupils from Lenham Primary School. This was their second Eddie & Ellie session, the first consisted of reading the storybook with a literacy lesson, followed by a three R’s (Reuse, Recycle, Reduce) poster making workshop. As an additional element to the workshops, every child was given a free copy of the storybook, a cotton book bag and t-shirt.

We loved the session with Sarah it was so good! … The children gained some good understanding of the 3R’s from the session.

Our most recent workshop with the children at Lenham Primary contained:

• Interactive session with Thakeham’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Sarah Crush, and Site Manager, James Daplyn, talking about how houses are built, relating to the National Curriculum materials content students have studied this term
• An activity focused on British wildlife, the site ecology and species we are building homes for alongside our homes for people. This took the form of a game delivered by our teacher partner, Sarah Leedham
• Essential ‘Early Careers Learning’
• Q & A at the end of the session

We look forward to our next workshop at Lenham Primary in the Spring term!

Thank you to all involved, the children had a lovely time… We will be talking about mammals in Science next week as part of our life cycles topic and I am sure some of what the children learnt about the local wildlife will be discussed. It’s wonderful when they can make links from their learning to their experiences and knowledge of the local area.
